The Fairy or Little Penguin (http://www.sydneyaquarium.com.au/Interact/INT022.asp) is the smallest of the 18
species of penguin and the only one to breed in Australia.
Penguins are birds that have lost the ability to fly. They
have adapted to a life spent more at sea than on land. They
are very well insulated for this watery existence producing
an oil which they spread through their dense feathers. They
have a flattened cornea and can see just as clearly
underwater as on land.
The wave action generated in this exhibit creates a natural
environment for the penguins and is behaviour enriching as
they enjoy diving through and riding the waves as they would
in the wild. The wave motion also promotes the growth of
seaweed and kelp.
